El Beso (The Kiss) por Juan Ramón Jiménez

En el fondo de la estancia
un instante nos hallamos;
la sombra nos envolvía
y nadie quiso mirarnos.

Yo sentí que me embriagaba
el perfume de los nardos
que le prendí aquella tarde
sobre su vestido blanco.

Como entonces nos queríamos
nuestros sueños se cruzaron:
yo me encontré sus mejillas
y ella encontré mis labios.

La sombra nos envolvía
y nadie quiso mirarnos;
y sin turbar el silencio,
dulcemente nos besamos.

In the gathering gloom
at the end of the room
we suddenly found ourselves
and nobody cared to look

I was beginning to swoon
on the nardo’s perfume
I’d pinned to her white blouse
this afternoon

And just as we’d wished
our wishes transfixed
me on her cheeks
she on my lips

In the gathering gloom
where nobody cared to look
without making a sound
we sweetly kissed.
