Avant Ricuas: Torres, Noel and Cruz

There is perhaps no greater gift, nor a more enviable one, than to grow up speaking two languages. On Wednesday night, October 25, three generations of Boricuas got together to read their poetry, and to celebrate the publication of Beneath the Spanish, a new book by Victor Hernández Cruz, who lives in Morocco, but happened to be in New York visiting friends and family. As luck would have it, I was already obligated to a friend’s opening night club act later that evening, but I wanted to see this Avant Ricuas reading so very much that as the day progressed I planned my movements down to the minute. Sadly, I had to leave before the reading was over, but gladly I got to document almost all of it, and it was, as you will see on the Vimeo, not to be missed. It isn’t only a reading by three skillfully serious and funny poets who know how to use every trick in the book that two languages afford them, but a discussion with Victor Hernández Cruz about the writing process as well. I am so glad I made it. Enjoy.
