Until the Rain

On Sunday, around four, I decided to take a walk for a stretch and a breath. When I got to the street, I noticed the traffic light blinking Don’t Walk to Walk. I took out my camera and got a shot of that. Then I saw the Christmas lights in the 9th Street Community Garden and I thought, Why not make a movie focusing on lights and capture how illumination grows as it gets darker?

As I walked, I shot fifty short segments of car lights, blinking signs, tug boats along the East River, whatever struck my fancy. When I started to edit it down later, the background sounds were so varied I thought I’d replace that jaggedness with music by Abing, the Chinese composer, a wandering (wondering) blind musician who played the erhu. Lucky for me Abing fit. He makes it more beautiful yet. I did something impulsively and it turned out to be beautiful. Beauty is what I strive for; I don’t often get there, but I strive for it.

Welcome to my neighborhood.

Well done, Don. A visual poem for sure. I recognize some of those scenes from my own walks along the river last year. Un abrazo from Mexico y Feliz Navidad.

  3. Beautiful. What a master on that instrument.
