Nos péchés sont têtus, nos repentirs sont lâches;

Aux objets répugnants nous trouvons des appas;

Et dans un bâillement avalerait le monde;

To the Reader

Stupidity, error, sin, greed
take hold of our spirit and work us
and we feed our old friends, the Remorses
like beggars nourish their fleas.

Our sins grow strong, repentance weak
We pay a lot to make confession
happily turning again to our filthy ways
believing a tear can wash away stains.

On the Pillow of Evil Very Great Satan
is rocking our enchanted spirit
until the rich metal of our will
is vaporized by this knowing chemist.

It’s the Devil plays the strings that move us
attracting us to the ugliest things
Each day toward Hell we keep descending
without horror through shadows that stink.

Like some poor drunk kisses and eats
the martyred breasts of an old whore
we steal in passing hidden pleasures
like an old orange we press, suck and squeeze.

Closed, like a million maggots forming
in our brains riots a nation of Demons
and when we breathe, Death in our lungs
descends, invisible river of heavy sobbing.

If rape, poison, daggers, arson
haven’t yet woven their pleasing patterns
on the banal canvas of our existence
it’s because we lack the stamina.

But among the jackals, the panthers, the lice
the apes, the scorpions, the vultures, the snakes
the crawling growling monsters that howl and shriek
in the infamous zoo of our Vices

there is one more ugly, evil, unclean
though he says or does no great thing
he’d make the earth into a dump
and swallow the world in a yawn.

It’s Boredom, eye full of an unwanted tear
dreaming of hangings smoking his houka
Reader, you know this delicate monster
Hypocrite Reader, my likeness, my brother.

Charles Baudelaire circa 1862
