This Morning

This morning when I went up on the roof to practice guitar and singing, a bird appeared and began to accompany me. I wish I knew my birds better, perhaps one day I will, but for now I think it was a female blue jay who, when she chirped, a bit of a crest briefly rose up. And then, two pigeons walked along the ledge—no song from them, but they were listening to our duet and enjoying it, harbingers of a good morning, the sun over Brooklyn and the Lower East Side all around us. It is not just the beating of the heart and the electricity; in every living thing there is a deity.
