I was at the Karma Bookstore the other day on Third Street near Avenue A when I heard that CA Conrad was going to read at Karma Gallery on 2nd Street between A and B on Sunday, which was yesterday, the 13th. It was at 4 PM I was told and because I don’t live far away, I left my apartment at quarter of, expecting to find a few people milling about before the reading started because nothing starts on time on the Lower East Side, but the reading was already in progress, and it was crowded—There stood CA Conrad at the door of the reading himself unable to get in, a room I saw as I got closer crammed full of people seated or standing at the back and leaning into the corners. Thinking it might be best to leave, I nodded goodbye to Conrad who nodded goodbye to me, but as I lingered looking at art, after one reader finished, some folks began to leave leaving enough space for Conrad to slip in, and me too in his wake. I’m glad I stayed. I held the camera—forget trying to set up a tripod in the press-steadily as I could knowing it would be easy enough to capture Conrad who is a showman too, who knows his poems well before he says them, honing himself into a presence working his words through meditation and rituals becoming the thoughts he feels; there is always going to be a real revealing when CA Conrad reads. Take a look and see.
