Time contains memories that are a pleasure to remember, memories that also bring pleasure to others.
From 2006 to 2010, I taught English during the summer at Wuhan University in Wuhan, China. In the evening for an extracurricular activity, I also had a poetry workshop for students who were interested. The poets and poems that follow are a result of the last workshop I did in July and August 2010. Each poet exists individually somewhere on this blog, but I’ve put them all together here and now in the video below that includes all of them reading their poems.
I wish that I had had more time in Wuhan to record more of my students. In the last blog post below entitled “Life by Daniel” you will find some of the poems other students wrote. I hope that you enjoy them.
The Storm by Richard He
Suddenly something stabbed my heart
Blinding lightning loudly thunders
Suddenly I felt myself collapse
A gust of wind, shuddering grass
But when all the shower passed away
Insects were singing, everything in peace

Hai Zu translated by Liu

Be a happy person from tomorrow on
Feeding the horse
Chopping the wood
Traveling around the world
Caring for crops and vegetables
From tomorrow on
I have a house facing the sea
Where flowers’ eyes open and see
Writing to every friend and relative
Tell them of my happiness
What the happy lightning tells me
I will tell everybody
Name every mountain and river with a touching name
Strangers, I wish you good luck
Hope you have a brilliant prosperity
Hope your romance comes to reality
Hope you gain your felicity
My wish is just to face the sea
Where flowers’ eyes open and see

A Mirror by Muhammad Izchi
I am a clear mirror.
You see yourself in my heart.
I see you every day.
My love! can you see my heart?

My Heart by Nicolas
My heart is a fragile vessel
Love is a seed
Soil filled up my heart
Love is a seed
The seed has blossomed into a flower
The vessel was ruined

断章
卞之琳
你站在桥上看风景,
看风景的人在楼上看你。
明月装饰了你的窗子,
你装饰了别人的梦。

A Scene by Iris Shieh
You are watching scenery on a bridge.
Someone is watching you from a window.
The moon is part of your view.
You are part of someone’s dream.

Dusk by Ruiqi Liu
Clouds fold, clouds stretch.
White deer, white cat.
Smooth red-color silk
spreads over blue mat.
Dark curtains close sky:
only blinking golden eyes.

On Passion by Richard He
You see it raining and rushing
Like beasts, and roaring
You tremble at it and pray
It keeps on pouring.

Homesickness by Min
It is a flying bird
without feet
but never gets tired
It is a strong tree
without roots
but never turns weak
It keeps disturbing wonderful dreams
Hence souls wander forever

You Are Beautiful by Di Wu
You are beautiful
like the blooming flowers.
But you are cold
like the darkest night.
You are innocent
like the pure blue sky.
But you are far away
like the smallest star.
My feeling is real
like the beating of my heart.
You Are Beautiful by Di Wu
