I’m ready sitting on the dock looking
at all the work before me. Today’s sun
breaks from the tree tops and the sparrows come
and start to dart disturbing the floating
sky rippling on the pond where I’ve noticed
an aquatic plant has invaded from
where I don’t know. It is an alien
spreading oval leaves over the surface
green from long purple slimy stems rooted
in the muddy bottom where I must dive
to wrench and pull them from the dark I have
always been afraid of. But determined
I’ll weed what promises with its presence
to drag the swimmer down if I let it.
