Beautiful poems often praise repulsive things like Baudelaire’s rotting carcass. Lynn McGee’s poetry also makes the ugly beautiful. This partly has to do with her poetic sense of empathy. When she writes about the rat, we know the rat because we are that rat. The python? We are him too. She takes us where we ought to go; not necessarily where we want to. Are you afraid of snakes? Here is Lynn’s invading python. Come on and pet him. Isn’t the language—I mean the python—beautiful? Heirloom Bulldog is published by Bright Hill Press.
