The Reading for Bessie’s Resurrection @Brooklyn Tea, May 19, 2019

On May the 19th, a pleasant Sunday afternoon, there was a launch for Kimberly A. Collins’s new book of poems, Bessie’s Resurrection, fresh off the presses from Indolent Books. She had two special guests reading with her, Antoinette Brim and Patricia Spears Jones, who brought their own unique voices to the reading of these mighty fine poems that are contemporary, yet come from the past, celebrating the lives of three African American women. The book provides voice for the fictional character Bessie Mears in Richard Wright’s Native Son along with aviator Bessie Coleman and singer Bessie Smith. This is very exciting work, and exciting too to hear these three poets, who delight, are seminal, and also have a lyrical clarion call for women’s rights in their voices. Enjoy.
