Pamela Sneed reads Speaking Tongue at Dashwood Projects

In early December of last year, Pamela Sneed was scheduled to read from her new book Speaking Tongue at 7 PM at Dashwood Projects in the East Village. The book is a vivid series of water colors done while in Africa that ends with an epiphany of a poem.

On the day of the reading, it rained, really poured, poured so heavily that Pamela Sneed got stuck underground on the train she coming to the reading on. Poor Pamela with the other passengers waited until they were told to abandon the train and make their way on foot along the tracks through the dripping dark and the rats until they finally got to the next subway station where they climbed up a ladder onto the platform, not at their destinations, but safe and sound.

Meanwhile, back at the gallery, we, the audience waited. Even with umbrellas, simply getting there, the rain had soaked us, so as we dried off, drinking white wine, we all began talking to each other with a camaraderie we would not have shared if things had started on time. And I was lucky to find my friend and fellow poet, Ama Birch, there. We were happy to spend some time.

When Pamela Sneed arrived, she was just as happy as we were. Perseverance is worthwhile. She reads “Speaking Tongue” in the Vimeo below. I include the Giraffe water colors. Enjoy.
