Some Thoughts, May 2

With the eye doctor yesterday, during the exam, I discussed diabetes, which I don’t have although it runs in my family, and as everybody knows causes eye damage. The doctor told me of a patient of hers, a man who at the age of 19 had type A diabetes and no health insurance so he couldn’t afford any insulin. He now has irreversible eye damage. “It’s a crime,” I said. “Yes, it is,” said the doctor angrily. I said, “It’s penny wise pound foolish.” “Yes,” agreed the doctor, “we are going to be supporting this young man one way or the other for the rest of his life.”

Conservatives tell us that charity begins at home. They are lying. Love begins at home and emanates beyond that boundary. Conservatives tell us they are responsible for themselves; by that they mean they are responsible for as far as their lawn mowers go, and they think they have the right to shoot you if you so much as step foot on what they own. At their property lines they end. That is why they can support the invasion of Iraq and then refuse to take any blame for all the problems their decision has exacerbated. ISIS lies at their feet and they won’t see it.

On my walk this morning there was a homeless man and flowers. Why aren’t there only flowers?
